January 3 - Vandalism Prevention

What a cold morning! -3 degrees while waiting for the bus this morning. I had my wool socks on which was good for standing in morning frost for about 10min. At least it wasn't raining today. Yes, I take public transit frequently to and from work. The ride is about 30-45min which isn't too bad; however, the bus is not the most glorious or enjoyable mode of transportation.

Picture of RDN bus taking me to work just after 9am.
The newer buses here have some interesting seats as you can see in the picture I took today. Although they are softer and warmer then the old plastic seats, the design would probably make most people nauseous. I hated them at first until I thought about it a little further. In terms of vandalism, who would bother to graffiti something that all ready looks vandalized?! In fact the city is probably saving quite a lot of money by having these seats.

While pondering this I recalled how I felt the same way with our new  mail-boxes that we got a while ago back in 2010. At first I thought they were a bit of an eyesore as well. Then I realized they were not getting vandalized nearly as much as the plane red ones that we had previously which in turn saves money! In fact I did some research and it was estimated that graffiti on  mail-boxes cost over $30,000 in Montreal alone to clean up. I don't know what Nanaimo pays in cleaning up graffiti, but if this is a way to save money I am all for it since we could use money in other areas such as healthcare or education.
Photo I found online to demonstrate the mailboxes we now have here.

Anyway, I had an extra busy day at work today. Got a surprise drive home from some really good friends. We all had dinner together and played a game called Dominion. It was really enjoyable. Time to relax : )

  1. Interesting thought, I bet they don't get as much writing and grafitti on those colourful bus seats.
